Dental care is one of those things in life that can’t be avoided, no matter what our schedules or budgets are like. For many, this contributes to a long list of expenses that make us feel stressed out or disorganised.

And if we have children, the list only gets longer!

But there are certain things we simply can’t let slide when it comes to the wellbeing of our kids. Of course, oral hygiene is among these things. Because early development is one of the most crucial stages for establishing long-lasting dental health, not taking our kids to the dentist could result in some even more expensive problems later in life.

Thankfully, a growing number of clinics in Australia recognise that the dental health of children should not depend on their parents’ income. To this end, clinics like Road Dental in Greenslopes have proudly opted into the Child Dental Benefits Schedule.

What is the Child Dental Benefits Schedule?

For eligible children, the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) can make all the difference.

It permits kids between 2 and 17 to receive free dental care for a period of 2 years, and can be claimed by eligible adults (typically a parent or approved care organisation). As long as the child is still below eighteen for at least part of the year in question, it is likely that they will fall under this scheme.

The CDBS covers most dental care up to $1,013 over this 2 year period. It allows for bulk billing of a range of treatments, including but not limited to: check-ups and cleaning, X-rays, fillings, root canals, extractions and fissure sealing.

How quickly you use these funds is up to you. However, if you use them up in the first year, you will have to wait until the next 2 year period to receive more funding. If your child is no longer eligible during this period, any remaining funds may be withdrawn, and there are also a few restrictions on orthodontic, cosmetic, or hospital based treatments.

Parents and guardians are notified if their children are eligible for the child dental benefit, so no application or registration is necessary. However, if you’re unsure about your kids’ eligibility or you still have questions, you’re more than welcome to phone Road Dental on (07) 3397 3999 to find out more.
