A trip to the dentist is rarely high on anyone’s list of enjoyable things to do, however there are plenty of ways that you can make the trip more comfortable for you and your family.

Healthy teeth and gums are important at any stage of life, and regular dental check ups should take place from quite young as part of your normal health care routine. But how to make those check-ups more comfortable?

5 Ways to Make a Dental Trip More Comfortable

Choose a Dentist You Like

One of the easiest ways to make a trip to any health service, but particularly dental, is to choose a dentist you like and feel comfortable with. A dentist who can deal with phobias and anxieties is well worth paying a little extra for. The ideal dentist should be willing to work with you to find strategies to make appointments more comfortable and relaxing.

Listen to Your Favourite Music or Podcast

One way to try and tune out of what the dentist is working on is to listen to your favourite music, podcast or audiobook. These are a great way to distract yourself, however it is important to let your dentist know that you will be using these in your appointment just in case they get in the way of the work being done.

Forgot the phone or tablet? Recite the alphabet backwards or practise your multiplication tables in your head to distract you.

Practise Relaxation

There are some great ways to overcome anxiety and make your dental trip more comfortable. Deep breathing, meditation and acupressure are great ways to help stay calm and focussed. If you have a dental appointment coming up, start practising these techniques now, so that when you are in the chair at your health care appointment, you’ll be ready to use them when you need them.

Get Some Support

For younger children, having a parent in the room with them is comforting; but it’s not different for adults who do get anxious when in the dental chair. Bringing along a friend, a partner or even a parent who can keep you distracted, and calm is a great help to yourself and to the dental team. If you are planning on doing this, just make sure that you let the dental clinic know so that they can accommodate everyone in the appointment.

Talk to the Dental Team

As well as choosing a dentist that you like, at Road Dental we appreciate when our clients speak to us about their concerns, whether it be a check-up or procedure.  With years of experience, we have a trick or technique up our sleeves to help even the most anxious of patients.

We will also help you be informed about the treatment or procedure you are having, talking you through the steps of what will happen and why we are doing it. For example, when we are doing a tooth filling, we may use a quick jet of air on the tooth. This is done to dry the tooth so that the filling adheres. By explaining the process, you’ll understand what is happening when  you get a weird sensation or hear a sudden noise.

The team at Road Dental are here to help you keep your teeth and gums healthy. A regular health care appointment with our dental team will ensure we pick up any issues early, and help you stay on top of your dental hygiene.

If you’re looking for a friendly, caring dentist in the Brisbane area, give us a call. We’ll do everything we can to help you and your family feel comfortable for your next dental appointment.
